The classic Marangu Route, also known as the “Coca-Cola Route”, is the only Kilimanjaro route that uses mountain huts for accommodation and follows the same path up and down the mountain.
The 5-day Marangu Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It is well suited for climbers who prefer sleeping in huts rather than tents and want a direct, well-established trail.
Although it is considered one of the easier routes in terms of terrain, the shorter duration means acclimatization time is limited. Proper pacing and experienced guides are essential for success.
Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Vegetation Zone: Rainforest
After breakfast, transfer to Marangu Gate for registration with Kilimanjaro National Park. Meet your mountain guides and porters before starting the climb. The trail passes through dense rainforest with high chances of spotting blue monkeys and unique bird species.
The ascent is gradual and allows your body to begin adjusting to altitude. Dinner and overnight stay at Mandara Hut in shared mountain huts.
Hiking Time: 6–7 hours
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Vegetation Zone: Moorland
The trail leaves the rainforest and enters open moorland with expansive views. Giant lobelias and groundsels begin to appear as altitude increases. Weather conditions can change quickly, offering both sunshine and mist.
Arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon. This is an important acclimatization day. Rest, hydrate well, and enjoy views of Mawenzi Peak.
Hiking Time: 6–8 hours
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Vegetation Zone: Alpine Desert
Today’s trek crosses the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The landscape becomes dry and rocky with thinner air. This is a physically demanding day, but the pace remains slow and steady.
Arrive at Kibo Hut by afternoon. After an early dinner, rest and prepare for the midnight summit attempt.
Hiking Time: 12–15 hours
Vegetation Zone: Arctic
Wake around midnight to begin the summit ascent. The climb is slow and challenging due to steep slopes and altitude. Reach Gilman’s Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
After taking photos and celebrating your achievement, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for overnight stay.
Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Distance: Approximately 18 km
Descend through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. At the gate, successful climbers receive summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi or Arusha, marking the end of the climb.
While the Marangu Route is considered one of the easier routes, altitude sickness can affect anyone. Proper hydration, slow pace, and listening to your guide are essential.
This itinerary is suitable for beginners with good fitness levels, but we always recommend adequate preparation before attempting the climb.
