The Northern Circuit Route is the newest and longest route on Mount Kilimanjaro. It begins in the west at the Londorossi Gate and follows the same path as the Lemosho Route for the first two days. After crossing the Shira Plateau, the route heads north and circles around the quieter northern slopes to the east side of the mountain. The Northern Circuit is the longest route on Kilimanjaro, taking 8 days to complete. The key advantage of the Northern Circuit Route is its superior acclimatization profile and very high summit success rate - approximately 95%.

Detailed Day-by-Day Itinerary

1 Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp)

Distance: 6 km / 4 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 2,100m → 2,780m

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins at Mti Mkubwa Gate (2,100m) where you'll complete registration formalities. Drive through coffee and banana plantations to the trailhead. The trek starts through lush montane rainforest filled with ancient trees draped in moss and beards of lichen. Watch for black and white colobus monkeys swinging through the canopy and listen to the calls of exotic birds. The forest floor is covered with ferns and wild flowers. Arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) at 2,780m for your first night on the mountain.

2 Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira Camp 1

Today you emerge from the rainforest and enter the moorland zone. The trail climbs steadily through giant heather and then into the open moorland where you'll see stunning volcanic rock formations. As you gain elevation, the landscape becomes more sparse and otherworldly. Cross several streams and enjoy increasingly spectacular views. The Shira Plateau begins to reveal itself - one of the highest plateaus on earth. Arrive at Shira Camp 1 (3,500m) with commanding views across the plateau.

3 Shira Camp II to Moir Hut

An easier day crossing the beautiful Shira Plateau. Trek east across the high-altitude desert with stunning 360-degree views of the mountain. The volcanic landscape is dotted with bizarre rock formations and hardy alpine plants. You'll reach Shira Camp 2 for lunch before continuing to Moir Hut. The route heads north toward the remote northern slopes of Kilimanjaro. Moir Hut sits in a beautiful valley beneath Lent Hills. Optional afternoon acclimatization hike to Lent Hills (4,600m) provides excellent altitude adaptation.

4 Moir Hut to Pofu Camp

Distance: 12 km / 7.5 miles
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: 4,200m → 4,020m

Today follows the northern circuit around Kilimanjaro through a remote wilderness. The trail climbs out of Moir Valley with spectacular views and then undulates across the northern slopes. This section sees very few climbers, giving you a true wilderness experience. The landscape is stark and beautiful - a high-altitude desert with volcanic rocks and hardy vegetation. You'll climb to around 4,600m before descending to Buffalo Camp (4,020m). The day includes excellent acclimatization with "climb high, sleep low" principle. Buffalo Camp offers stunning views of Kibo and the eastern ice fields.

5 Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

Continue around the northern side of Kilimanjaro, enjoying solitude and pristine wilderness. The trail passes through the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, offering incredible views of both volcanic cones. You'll trek across a lunar landscape with volcanic rocks and scree fields. The eastern side of Kilimanjaro is drier and more barren but equally spectacular. Arrive at Third Cave Camp (3,870m), nestled in a sheltered valley with good protection from wind. This is another strategic camp for acclimatization before the summit push.

6 Third Cave to School Hut

A steady climb to School Hut, your final camp before the summit attempt. The trail ascends the rocky slopes of Kibo, passing through increasingly barren terrain. You'll gain about 900m in elevation but it's a shorter day to allow rest before the summit push. School Hut (4,750m) sits at the base of the crater rim, offering spectacular views across to Mawenzi. Arrive by early afternoon to rest, hydrate, and prepare your gear for the midnight summit attempt. Your guides will brief you on the summit night plan. Early dinner around 5 PM, then try to sleep before the midnight wake-up call.

7 School Hut to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp

Distance: 6 km up, 12 km down
Hiking Time: 12-16 hours total
Elevation: 4,750m → 5,895m → 3,080m
Zone: Glaciers/Arctic to Rainforest

SUMMIT DAY! Wake around midnight for tea and biscuits. Begin the summit ascent around 1 AM under a sky full of stars. The steep climb takes 6-7 hours, scrambling over volcanic scree and rocks. Watch the sunrise from high on the mountain - one of the most spectacular sights in Africa. Reach Gilman's Point (5,685m) on the crater rim, then continue 1-2 hours around the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) - the Roof of Africa! Celebrate at the summit with photos by the famous sign. The views are absolutely breathtaking with glaciers all around.

After celebrating, begin the long descent back to School Hut for a short rest and lunch. Continue descending through Barafu Camp and down to Mweka Camp (3,080m) in the rainforest zone. This is a very long day - typically 12-16 hours of hiking. You'll descend nearly 3,000m, passing through all climate zones in a single day. Arrive at Mweka Camp exhausted but triumphant, for your final night on the mountain.

8 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate - Celebration!

Distance: 10 km / 6 miles
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 3,080m → 1,640m

After breakfast, begin the final descent through lush montane rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640m). The trail can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles are helpful. Enjoy the rich greenery, birdsong, and possibly see monkeys as you descend. The oxygen-rich air of lower elevation will make you feel energized despite tired legs. At Mweka Gate, you'll sign out and receive your official summit certificates - a green certificate for reaching Gilman's Point (5,685m) or a gold certificate for reaching Uhuru Peak (5,895m). Celebrate your incredible achievement with your guide and porter team. Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, celebration dinner, and well-deserved rest!

Essential Information

Best Time to Climb

  • January - March: Coldest but clearest views, fewer climbers, excellent summit success
  • June - October: Dry season, most popular time, warm weather, clear skies
  • Avoid April - May: Heavy rain season (trail can be very muddy and slippery)
  • November - December: Short rains, fewer crowds, good conditions

Fitness & Health Requirements

  • Good physical fitness required - ability to hike 5-7 hours per day
  • No technical climbing skills needed, but mental determination essential
  • Consult your doctor before booking, especially if you have heart/lung conditions
  • Recommended vaccinations: Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, Tetanus
  • Anti-malarial medication recommended for lowlands
  • Altitude sickness is the main challenge - our acclimatization schedule minimizes risk
